San Diego Country Estates has earned official Firewise USA® certification from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). As of 2026, SDCE holds three separate certifications covering the South/Barona Mesa, West, and East zones of the community.
What is Firewise USA®?
Firewise USA® is a national program developed by the NFPA in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and state forestry agencies. Communities earn certification by meeting strict annual requirements — ongoing vegetation management, defensible space work, evacuation planning, and resident education. It's not a one-time designation. SDCE has to earn it every year.
Why does this matter for your insurance?
California's "Safer from Wildfires" regulations require insurance companies to recognize Firewise USA® membership when setting premiums. In plain terms: insurers are required by California law to factor in your community's certification when determining your rate. Carriers including USAA, Mercury Insurance, and the California FAIR Plan are among those known to offer discounts to residents of certified communities.
For homeowners in wildfire-prone areas of California who have seen their premiums climb — or received non-renewal notices — this certification is a meaningful asset. It won't guarantee a discount with every carrier, but it gives you a documented, state-recognized reason to ask for one.
